Why compress PDF
Compressing a PDF here does not touch your images pixel by pixel — it rewrites the file's internal object and cross-reference streams through iText's writer with full compression mode enabled, then re-applies Deflate at either a default or maximum compression level depending on the preset you pick.
That distinction matters for what actually shrinks: redundant object dictionaries, embedded font subsets, structure trees, and content streams compress hard because Deflate loves repeated data. A scanned page whose image is already stored as DCTDecode (JPEG) inside the PDF won't be re-encoded — so a photo-heavy scan and a text-heavy contract do not shrink by the same percentage, even on the same preset.
DSNOOPDOC exposes exactly two dials — Balanced and Maximum — because that's the real surface area of a stream-recompression approach. There's no slider promising huge savings on a file that's already lean; the tool reports the before and after size so you can see what actually happened rather than trust a marketing number.

?Will Maximum compression blur my text or images?
No — this isn't image downsampling. Maximum switches the writer to its best Deflate compression level for object and content streams; vector text stays vector. If a page is a scanned photo already stored as JPEG, its pixel data isn't re-encoded, so visual quality doesn't degrade either way.
?Why did my scanned PDF barely shrink?
If the scan's images are already compressed with DCTDecode (JPEG) at a moderate quality, there's little redundant data left for Deflate to squeeze out of the stream wrapper. Files that shrink the most tend to be ones with heavy object or font overhead relative to their images, not raw photo scans.
?What's the actual difference between Balanced and Maximum?
Both apply full compression mode with rebuilt object streams. Balanced uses the writer’s default compression level; Maximum sets it to the library’s best-compression setting, which trades a bit more processing time for a tighter Deflate pass on the same streams.
?Does compressing strip form fields, bookmarks, or metadata?
No — the operation rewrites how streams are encoded, not what objects exist. Interactive form fields, outlines, and document structure carry over; only the underlying compression of those objects changes.
?Is there a file size limit?
Uploads are capped at 50MB. Above that, split the PDF first or compress sections separately, since the entire file is read into memory for the rewrite.
?Can I compress a password-protected PDF directly?
Remove the password first with the password-removal tool, then compress — the writer needs to read and rebuild the object streams, which an encrypted file blocks until it's decrypted with the correct password.
