Why the Organize tray beats stitching files together blind
Organize takes every PDF you drop in and turns each of their pages into a separate thumbnail in one shared tray, so pages from three different uploads can be interleaved, deleted, or rotated before anything is written back to a single file.
The tray you see is a pdf.js rendering of each page at reduced scale; dragging with the pointer reorders that shared list, and a rotate button spins the thumbnail locally purely as a preview of the angle you are about to apply.
Pressing save sends your original files untouched, plus a manifest listing the final page order, source file, and rotation for each slot — the actual page copying, rotation, and blank-page insertion all happen once, server-side, when that manifest is applied.
One page pool across every file you drop in
Every uploaded PDF gets torn down into individual thumbnails inside a single tray, so a rider from file B can sit between page 4 and page 5 of file A without you first flattening either document into a combined draft.
Rotation stored as a page property, not a redraw
The angle you set on a thumbnail travels to the server as a plain integer per page. iText adds it to whatever rotation value the page already carried and writes that into the page dictionary — the underlying content stream, including selectable text, is never touched.
Blank pages behave as real inserted pages
A blank slot you drop between two thumbnails becomes an actual new page object at export time, not a placeholder graphic pasted on top of a scan — useful for section dividers you want to number or leave intentionally empty.
Source page sizes are not forced to match
Because each page is copied into the output with its own media box intact, a Letter-size cover page and A4 body pages can sit in the same organized file without one silently stretching to match the other.

?How is Organize actually different from Merge PDF on this site?
Merge appends whole files one after another in upload order. Organize renders every page of every uploaded file into one shared tray so you can interleave, delete, rotate, and insert blanks at the individual page level before anything is written to disk — the two share a code path on the backend but the client-side page pool is what changes.
?When I click rotate on a thumbnail, does it re-render that page as an image?
No. The thumbnail spins in the browser purely so you can see the change; what actually gets sent is a rotation number for that page. The export step reads it with iText, adds it to the page's existing rotation value, and writes the sum into the page dictionary — vector text stays vector text.
?What happens if a source page was already scanned in sideways with its own rotation flag set?
Because the server adds your chosen angle to whatever rotation the page dictionary already contains (mod 360), a page that came in already marked as rotated 90 degrees combines correctly with an extra 90-degree tray rotation instead of one value overwriting the other.
?Do inserted blank pages inherit headers, margins, or anything from the pages next to them?
No — a blank slot becomes a fresh page added directly to the output document with no inherited content. Treat it strictly as a separator or a placeholder you plan to fill later with another tool, not as a templated page.
?Can I combine PDFs that use different page sizes, like one Letter file and one A4 file?
Yes. Each page keeps its own media box when it is copied into the merged document, so mixed sizes carry through untouched. Some downstream portals reject uneven page sizes in a single upload, so check the destination's requirements before submitting.
?Why would an organize job fail partway through?
The server opens each uploaded file with its own PDF reader before copying pages out of it. A file that is encrypted, truncated, or not a real PDF fails to open at that step and the whole job errors out — unlock any password-protected files first and confirm each upload opens cleanly in a normal PDF viewer.
